What to change when the gym is busy

Keep the session recognisable when your planned bench, machine or cable station is occupied.

You arrive with a plan, but every bench is taken. Before replacing half the workout, decide whether the problem is the exercise, its position in the session or simply a short wait.

Start with the smallest change

If another planned exercise is free, changing the order may be enough. Keep track of the change: an exercise done near the end of a session may feel different from the same exercise done first.

If you choose a substitute, pick a familiar movement you can set up properly. The closest-looking exercise is not always the one you know best.

Choose a sensible alternative

These are examples to consider, not claims that the exercises are identical.

Planned exercisePossible alternativeWhat to review
Barbell bench pressDumbbell bench press or chest press machineSetup, load convention and a suitable starting weight
Seated cable rowChest-supported rowGrip, support and the exercise’s own history
Lat pulldownAnother pulldown station or assisted pull-upAssistance is not the same as lifted load
Leg pressAnother familiar leg press or squat variationMachine setup and an independently chosen load
Cable triceps extensionA familiar dumbbell or machine extensionPosition, control and available increments

Do not transfer a weight automatically between machines or movements. “50 kg” on one machine is not a promise that another will feel the same. Use the replacement’s previous record if you have one, or establish a manageable starting point.

Keep the history honest

Log the exercise you actually did. Renaming a dumbbell press as a barbell bench press just to preserve the plan makes future comparisons less useful.

Add a short note when the difference matters: “Cable occupied; chest-supported row today.” If you changed the order, record that too. You do not need a long explanation for every session.

Decide whether the change should stay

In Gorivo, replace the exercise during the active workout. At the end, review whether you want to update the saved routine. A change you liked can become part of next week’s plan; a one-off workaround can stay in that completed session.

For the controls, see changing an exercise. If you regularly replace most of a workout, revisit the plan so it fits the gym and time you actually have.
