Caffeine before an evening workout

Check the full day’s caffeine before adding a pre-workout, especially when you train late.

A pre-workout label usually tells you what is in a serving. It does not know about your morning coffees, the energy drink at lunch or what time you want to sleep.

Count the sources, not just the scoop

Caffeine is present in familiar drinks and some sports supplements. Amounts vary between products and servings. Check the label and serving size, then include the other sources you have had that day. A second scoop is a second serving, not simply a stronger flavour.

The Australian Institute of Sport’s caffeine guidance describes performance benefits alongside individual differences and unwanted effects. More is not automatically more useful.

Think past the session

Caffeine can remain in your system for hours. The AIS gives an approximate half-life of five hours and highlights the need to consider sleep when choosing timing. That is an average, not a personal countdown to being caffeine-free. Nervousness, anxiety and disturbed sleep are reasons to reconsider use and seek appropriate advice.

Make the decision before you leave

If your training regularly starts late, decide in advance whether you want a caffeinated product. Do not make taking it a condition for completing the workout. Keep the product name and amount visible rather than relying on “one pre-workout” as a description.

A useful note might be: “Evening session, no pre-workout; normal working weights.” Another might record the exact product used. Over time, you can review those notes with your sessions instead of remembering only the strongest or weakest workout.

Use reminders carefully

Gorivo can remind you about a supplement routine, but a scheduled alert is not a recommendation to take caffeine at that time. Edit or remove a reminder that no longer fits your training schedule. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about suitability if you take medicines or have a relevant health condition.

For the app steps, see supplement reminders. For the wider decision, start with supplements before you buy.
